Compared with the pristine beach locations further south, Negombo is rather modest and a bit dated. However, being within than an hour drive of Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo’s Airport) means that Negombo is a perfect stop before or after an international flight. Resorts here tend to be large, and they vary in cost and quality, so we can recommend where’s best to stay. There’s a clutch of good value restaurants serving freshly caught seafood, as well as simple boutiques that trace the same line as the hotels. In the main town of Negombo you’ll find an effervescent fish market, which is worth exploring if you have time, along with a selection of colourfully adorned fishing boats that make fantastic photographs.
